After 45 years, Wally Larrabee is retiring from Associated Food Stores. His time at AFS has been one of dedication, growth, and transformation, not only in his own career but also in the evolution of technology within the company.
Wally’s career began while he was still attending college when he was hired in Accounts Payable, processing rebate payments for retailers. Just a few months later, he was invited by the Data Processing Director—back when that was the official title—to join the mainframe operations team. Wally has been in the IT department ever since contributing to the technological advancements that have shaped AFS over the decades.
Reflecting on his career, Wally shares that one of his most cherished experiences has been the opportunity to work with so many good people. His advice to his fellow team members is simple yet profound: “Always be loyal to Associated Food Stores. This company has given me and my family so much— a home, access to world-class healthcare, opportunities to travel, and most significantly, the ability to enjoy a retirement.”
Throughout his tenure, Wally has had a front-row seat to the evolution of technology, witnessing firsthand how it has transformed the industry and enhanced lives in ways once unimaginable. While he will miss the projects, tasks, and goals that have been accomplished, what he will miss the most are the relationships built over the years. “After all the projects, tasks, and WIGs have been completed, what remains is the people. It has been an honor to know so many good people.”
