Pumpkin spice mania has once again arrived, and it’s painting Utah, and AFS retailers’ stores, in the warm hues of autumn. Bakeries are abuzz with the delightful aroma of pumpkin items, and an array of pumpkin spice-inspired goodies fills the shelves each year.
Director of Fresh Bakery Dan Hilgenberg is quick to point out that, in AFS stores, pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, “rule the world.” Dan explained, “We sell more pumpkin chocolate chip cookies than any other item. It’s a Utah favorite. In fact, we buy three full truckloads of Libby’s #10 can pumpkin every year just for those cookies alone.”
Google Trends recently unveiled a map that spills the beans on the most beloved pumpkin spice foods across the nation based on internet searches. It seems like many states have developed a sweet tooth for pumpkin spice desserts as these treats have clearly stolen the spotlight on the map.
Pumpkin spice cakes, donuts, rolls, pie, pudding and even Pumpkin Spice Oreos reign supreme in states like Florida, Louisiana, California, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada. They’ve taken their love for pumpkin spice to a whole new level!
Meanwhile, Pumpkin Spice Cheerios has captured the hearts of Utah, along with Alaska, Massachusetts, and Maine, among others. (Dan argues that pumpkin chocolate chip cookies may not show as Utah’s favorite in Google as shoppers already know where to find them.)
While most pumpkin spice choices are quite predictable, some states have ventured into uncharted territory. For instance, Georgia surprised many with their top search for “Pumpkin Spice Empanadas.” It seems they’ve embraced a Southwestern twist on the classic flavor.
Delaware, on the other hand, took a unique path with their most-searched dish: “Pumpkin Spice Deer Jerky.” Lastly, Arizona has raised eyebrows with their apparent affection for “Pumpkin Spice Spam.”
