This week, Associated Food Stores’ senior leadership gathered to plan and strategize for the company’s continued success. Leaders representing every facet of AFS reported on progress and presented plans and recommendations to establish company priorities for the future.
During the meetings, President and CEO David Rice encouraged the group to take a big-picture approach, challenging them to think beyond the present.
“As leaders, it’s critical that we climb to the ‘crow’s nest’—the highest vantage point—to see the bigger picture,” said David. “From this perspective, we can look ahead, anticipate challenges and chart a clear course for the future.”
David also emphasized the need to combine strategic thinking with the company’s core values. “There is so much to celebrate, and I’m incredibly proud of the work this team has accomplished over the last year,” he added. “But we can’t stop there. We need to push ourselves to be better, smarter and more efficient. That’s how we ensure our retailers and team members thrive.”
The leadership meetings featured discussions on several key topics, with leaders presenting insights and initiatives including:
- Finance and Accounting Update

- Marketing and Merchandising

- Project ROAR (distribution center modernization)
- Project updates highlighted steady progress in automation, improved efficiency, and streamlined operations to better support retailers.
- Enterprise Risk Management and Public Affairs
- Discussions centered on mitigating risks, advocating for beneficial legislation and strengthening relationships with key audiences.

Following the meeting, Executive Vice President and COO Roger White reflected on the importance of taking time to think long-term. “The nature of our business is often so intense day to day that we don’t always spend enough time discussing our plans for years down the road,” Roger said. “This was a great opportunity for our leaders to represent their teams and outline where we need to go and how we’ll get there.”
Throughout the discussions, leaders emphasized how each plan aligns with the broader goal of benefiting both retailers and team members.
“We always need to start with the heart,” David noted. “Every strategy we create should not only deliver the financial results we need but also support the people and communities we serve. It’s a virtuous cycle that makes it possible for everyone to succeed.”
In 2025, leaders will continue to collaborate on these priorities and share strategies through Team News, FoodShow, the annual meeting, team meetings and Retailer Connection meetings, ensuring progress remains a company-wide focus.
