Safety in the Sun: Did you get your free TopCare Sunscreen?
As the sun’s warm rays shine down on us outdoors, it’s important to make sure that while we’re having fun, we are also protecting our skin. Sunscreen plays a crucial role in protecting us against the harmful UV rays.
Choosing the Best Sunscreen
When choosing your sunscreen make sure it’s broad spectrum! This will protect you against both UVA and UVB rays. The NIH says that “UVB rays are responsible for producing sunburn. They also play the greatest role in causing skin cancers. UVA rays also play a role in skin cancer formation. In addition, the UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the skin and play a greater role in premature skin aging changes including wrinkle formation.” This is why it’s also important to choose a sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher!
If you’re planning on a day at the pool, or a nice sunny day at Lagoon, make sure your sunscreen is water-resistant! Regular sunscreen can wash off the water or you can sweat it off. If you’re exercising or swimming, you should reapply more frequently.
You may think you don’t need sunscreen on cloudy days, but UV rays can still penetrate through clouds. It’s a good idea to wear sunscreen daily.
Apply Generously and Frequently
Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before sun exposure. Otherwise, you may still end up getting sunburned because the sunscreen didn’t have time to absorb to your skin. You should also reapply every 2-3 hours, less if you have been swimming or sweating. Make sure to apply it everywhere that isn’t covered by sunglasses, a hat, or protective clothing! You can also use a lip balm containing SPF to protect your lips.
