In 1974, fresh out of the Navy, Bob White began his journey at Associated Food Store (AFS). His first role was in the shipping department, loading trucks by hand on the swing shift. Just six days later, an opportunity opened in the computer room—a position he had applied for—and that marked the beginning of a career that would span five decades.
Over the years, Bob held a variety of roles in the IT department at AFS. He started as a forms burster, transitioned to a computer operator, and eventually became a supervisor. He even spent a short stint as a programmer. For the last several years, he served as the lead for the inside computer support teams in Salt Lake City and Farr West. “Through it all, I had the privilege of working alongside some of the best team members in the company. Their dedication and camaraderie were the true highlights of my career,” Bob noted.
The family-oriented environment is one of the things Bob has always loved about AFS. Many employees, including Bob, have multiple generations of family members that have contributed to the company. Bob’s stepdad, David Jares, was the first in their family to work at AFS, starting around 1962. His mom, Edna Jares, spent 30 years working in the candy room, and his younger brother Todd also worked there for a time.
AFS is where Bob met his wife, Kim, nearly 48 years ago, and together they built a family deeply connected to the company. Their children followed in their footsteps: JR worked in the Art Department, Tiffany is part of the Accounts Receivable team, and Morgan is in payroll. Bob is immensely proud of their accomplishments and their contributions to AFS.
Some of Bob’s fondest memories include the company’s Christmas movie screenings at the old Villa Theater, Lagoon Day, and the generous luncheons provided when employees had to work holidays. These events not only brought colleagues together but also reinforced the sense of family that defines AFS.
When Bob first joined AFS, he had no idea he’d stay for 50 years. But looking back, it has been an incredible journey, filled with growth, relationships, and countless memories. His experience reflects the essence of AFS as a company that values its people and fosters a family-like culture. Bob’s contributions over the past five decades speak to his character, dedication, and build on the enduring legacy of AFS.
