The ongoing Avian Flu outbreak has caused significant disruptions to the nation’s egg supply, forcing consumers and retailers to adapt to shortages and rising prices. Since the outbreak began, an estimated 95 million egg-laying hens have been humanely euthanized to control the spread of the virus. The loss of such a large portion of the nation’s flock has led to tighter supplies and higher costs for eggs across the country.
Despite these challenges, AFS reports that egg supplies continue to flow, albeit at reduced levels. “Each day, we receive additional eggs at the AFS distribution center,” said Doug Pitt, category manager. “Our egg suppliers are working tirelessly to expedite as many eggs as possible to our retailers and the communities we serve.”
Doug and many others throughout Associated Food Stores are working extremely hard to mitigate the impacts as much as possible. In many communities throughout the company’s service area, AFS members are the only stores with eggs in stock.
In response to the situation, AFS has implemented measures to ensure equitable distribution of eggs. Allocation systems, which were first introduced in October at the onset of the outbreak, remain in place to stretch the supply as much as possible. Additionally, AFS is collaborating with egg suppliers and state government agencies to maintain steady availability for consumers as much as possible.
Retailers have been encouraged to place limits on egg purchases to help balance demand, and a communication template is available on StoreLink to assist stores in implementing these limits.
Looking ahead, egg suppliers are optimistic that the supply chain will recover by late spring as farms rebuild their flocks. However, in the short term, consumers may experience periodic out-of-stock situations and temporary price increases.
