Debbie Smith, a long-time senior buyer at Associated Food Stores, became an AFS team member in 1989. She started the exciting new adventure with no prior experience in grocery retail or wholesale and it was a challenge she was willing to take on. With a background in office work, she faced her new role with excitement and slight apprehension. Her first few years at the GM facility in Payson laid the groundwork for her growth and development. Over time, she transitioned through various positions, including selector, inventory control, shipping clerk, and GM buyer, showing her commitment to AFS and adaptability to change.

Debbie managed the challenge of work/life balance well and gracefully handled the responsibilities of motherhood and employment. With four children, AFS continually supported her and her family, becoming, as she says, her “second family.” Debbie’s ongoing dedication to her role as a mother, wife and grandmother exemplified her ability to give her all both at work and at home, creating a loving environment for her family.

As the oldest of five and raised in Montana, Debbie’s passion for hunting, fishing, camping and traveling has been deeply rooted in her outdoor-loving upbringing. She cherishes her childhood and eagerly looks forward to future adventures, which include pursuing her biggest buck this November and going on a cruise this coming January. With a growing family of 24 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, she looks forward to creating cherished memories and spending quality time with her loved ones.

Throughout her career, Debbie embraced challenges and remained open to new opportunities. Her belief in setting goals and maintaining a positive mindset has been instrumental in her success. She encourages others to take chances, listen to mentors and cultivate relationships that can guide their paths. Debbie is grateful for the mentors who have influenced her journey, including John Hardy, Richard Hardy, Brian Duff, Ron Christensen, Boyd Irving, Todd Bell and Tim Conner. Each of these team members, and many others, have played a vital role in her development, teaching her valuable lessons and strengthening her resolve.

As she steps away from her professional role, Debbie envisions a bright future for AFS, hoping to see continued growth and an emphasis on independent family businesses. Her belief that these enterprises can strengthen communities reflects her passion for nurturing relationships and fostering a sense of belonging.

In celebrating Debbie Smith’s retirement, AFS honors not just her contributions but also her positive spirit and dedication to family. Her journey serves as an inspiration, reminding others to embrace change, nurture passions and support one another along the way.
