Dear Friends,
By now, you may have heard the news, but I want to take a moment to share some personal thoughts. After nearly 32 years with Associated Food Stores, I’ve accepted an opportunity to become the CEO at URM. URM is a retail cooperative much like AFS, serving the Northwest. While this transition comes with a lot of excitement, it also comes with deep emotion and reflection.
This wasn’t something I was seeking. In fact, after working briefly outside of AFS 25 years ago, I returned just nine months later with a renewed appreciation for what makes this place so unique. I planned to finish my career here and would have happily and gratefully done so. When this opportunity came up, I talked it over with David Rice, who has been a trusted mentor and guide throughout my career. Together, we agreed that if there were ever a role that made sense for me to pursue beyond AFS, it would be this one.

I’m incredibly grateful to Dave, not only for his support in this decision but for the many years of leadership, guidance and friendship. His influence has shaped my career in many ways and I’ll always appreciate everything he’s done for me. I also appreciate the many other close friends and associations that have meant so much to me over the years. You’ve all made a big difference in my life and I truly appreciate it.
Thank you for your trust, your partnership and for allowing me to be part of the important work we do every day. What I’ve appreciated most during my time here is the genuine camaraderie and shared purpose we’ve all had. That’s what makes AFS so special.
Even as I step into this new role, I’m glad I’ll still be connected to the world of independent grocery and to so many of you I’m fortunate to call friends. Thank you again for the many years of friendship, support and shared success. It’s been the honor of a lifetime.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Roger
