Big Step in Warehouse Modernization is Complete
Warehouse modernization, Associated Food Stores’ (AFS) initiative to ensure the Farr West Distribution Center remains a full-service, state-of-the-art facility, continues to progress.
On June 30, three Symbotic representatives (sales director, project manager, system design engineer) visited the distribution center to finalize the placement of the system and review AFS processes before starting on the final design. (Symbotic is the third-party automation provider AFS is using to complete the project.)
Last week, team members helped take another exciting step in the process. In partnership with Symbotic, the group conducted a 3D scan of the grocery portion of the distribution center. The purpose of the scan was to measure each building column down to the millimeter.
After the scan is complete, the team will have a 3D Revit® model of the distribution center. Revit is a commercial building information modeling software from the company Autodesk. It’s generally used by architects, structural engineers, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers, designers, and contractors. Revit allows users to create, edit and review 3D models in exceptional detail including the distribution center in Farr West.
Additionally, AFS procurement leadership met with distribution center leaders Glen Keysaw and Justin Johnson to discuss the project timeline, address any obstacles that may occur during construction and create small teams that will develop solutions to eliminate or alleviate any potential strains during the project.
“Warehouse modernization using automation and other efforts will improve quality of life for team members throughout our company,” said Justin. “It also helps us remain one of the best grocery wholesalers in the nation as we serve our member owners. It’s rewarding to see the progress thus far and we look forward to the exciting developments as the project moves along.”
