Associated Food Stores celebrated a major milestone in its distribution center modernization project with the official activation of Symbotic Inc.’s cutting-edge automation system. The event, dubbed “First ROAR,” celebrated the dedication and teamwork that brought this initiative to life, highlighting the outstanding efforts of the distribution center team in implementing the system.
The implementation of Symbotic’s automation technology represents a significant leap forward in AFS’s commitment to efficiency and service for nearly 500 independent grocers across nine Intermountain states. The system’s robotic case pick capabilities will enhance product selection, streamline deliveries and improve overall supply chain accuracy, ultimately benefiting AFS retailers and their customers.
“Today is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our distribution center team and so many others,” said David Rice, AFS president and CEO. “By embracing advanced automation and partnering with Symbotic, we are positioning ourselves at the forefront of supply chain innovation, ensuring our retailers receive products more efficiently and accurately than ever before.”
The event featured a ceremonial power-up of the automation system, guided facility tours, recognition of the individuals who played key roles in the project’s success and, to top it off, Symbot-style doughnuts from nearby Lee’s Marketplace.
Justin Johnson, director of logistics, was the master of ceremonies and expressed gratitude for the trust that exists between wholesale and retail. David Rice spoke about the power of “One Associated” and the importance of teamwork in accomplishing great achievements. Glen Keysaw, vice president of distribution, praised the entire AFS team, partners such as Big D and others who have been instrumental in the success thus far. Christin Kheir, from Symbotic, commended the partnership, family feel and hard work of all involved. Mark Ridley, owner of Ridley’s Markets and board member, provided inspiring remarks about the power of the AFS cooperative and reinforced the symbiotic relationship between AFS and its member retailers.
The event would not have been possible without the seamless collaboration between the distribution center team, communications team, facilities and maintenance teams and others whose collective efforts ensured a smooth launch and celebration.
For example, team members Russ Hatt and Todd Humphrey built the “power switch,” a creative and artistic switch made of reclaimed materials. The creatively designed apparatus served as a symbolic activation device for the system’s ceremonial power-up. It features a rugged, industrial-style metal enclosure with “ROAR” branding prominently displayed on the front. Two side panels house switches or controls, and red lights on top add to its dramatic effect. When engaged, the switch triggers a striking visual display with a bright, electric-like surge running up the wall. Mark Ridley and David Rice, representing both wholesale and retail, activated the switched to the literal “roar” of the crowd.
Damon Fischio, Ken Culverson, Terri Jensen, Tony Merrill, Rand Mickelson, Elizabeth Barnett, Judson Barnett and many other team members played major roles in the event’s execution.
The automation initiative is designed to transform the distribution center into a next-generation facility capable of meeting both current and future demands.
Glen emphasized the opportunities this technology brings for team members. “Implementing the Symbotic system creates new possibilities for our distribution center employees to expand their skill sets and grow within the company. Thanks to proactive leadership, all current team members will retain their jobs while we continue supporting independent grocers throughout the Intermountain West.”
This milestone highlights AFS’s ongoing mission to empower local retailers with the tools and resources necessary to compete in an evolving marketplace. With phase one now live, the team has begun phase two of the implementation that is expected to be complete in about one year.
