Associated Food Stores’ member retailers are experiencing continued success with seasonal general merchandise (GM) sales, leading to significant growth for retailers and the wholesale team as well. Over the last several years, GM sales have seen a substantial lift, reflecting the changing consumer habits and evolving strategies from retailers. 

AFS GM experts note that consumer behavior has shifted, with shoppers visiting fewer stores but making more purchases when they find items of interest at competitive prices from their local grocer. “Retailers are doing an outstanding job of selecting relevant products and displaying them in ways that resonate with customers,” said Emily Nelson, GM category manager. 

Trending items this year include highland cows, mushroom décor, Hot Wheels cars and toys—currently the number one toy globally—and outdoor furniture, including convertible benches from a local vendor. These products have been particularly popular, driving sales and further solidifying the success of the GM program. 

Recently, over 150 individual members of Associated Food Stores attended the GM Show at the AFS corporate office, where they had the opportunity to items for next spring. With dozens of categories represented, the show was a fast-paced and successful event. 

“The GM Show was extremely successful,” Emily added. “We received positive feedback from retailers and are thrilled that they could take advantage of such great deals.” 

GM Shows are held twice a year. Many team members contribute to the success of these events, including the category management assistants and various teams from the warehouse. 

“We want to extend our gratitude to our core team, including Dani Delong, Bryan Duncan, Richard Watson, Matthew Blanken, Traci Tourreuil and Lisa Dall,” Emily said. “We also appreciate the efforts of the center store specialists and the Salt Lake City warehouse teams. It takes a lot of planning and teamwork to make the GM seasonal program appealing to both retailers and their shoppers.”
